How to Calm Nerves With Aromatherapy

    Living a stressful life is no big news in today's fast-paced world. With deadlines looming and nerves twittering, many people seek out anxiety medication or other prescription drugs. A simple and natural answer to nervous tension is aromatherapy. Calm your nerves with aromatherapy and relax.

Step 1
Keep in mind that aromatherapy is essential oils or liquid plant materials. Each oil is extracted from a plant through a distilling process. The name of the oil generally corresponds to the plant it is derived.

Step 2
Take some deep breaths. Before using aromatherapy try to relax and forget the stress of the day; live in the current moment.

Step 3
Choose an appropriate fragrance. Each essential oil has different properties and can create a different mood.

Step 4
Try lavender oil. The herb is known for its relaxing properties and can relieve migraines. It can also be dabbed on pillowcases and breathed in for its sleep-inducing effects. Lemon oil may lift your spirits and reduce stress. Basil oil can improve concentration and soothe headaches as well as lift spirits.

Step 5
Apply aromatherapy oils. When applied to pulse points--the wrists, neck and temples--the smell is heightened by the heat of the body.

Step 6
Mix oils for a combination effect. Dab a few drops of lavender with a few drops of basil on wrists for double relaxation. Reduce the aroma with a "carrier" oil like almond oil if necessary.

Step 7
Sprinkle some oils on a handkerchief and smell it throughout the day to relieve stress and calm nerves. Use a warm compress or eye mask at night with aromatherapy as well. Breathe in the soothing vapors and relax.
